The First Bloom of spring

A comic that I drew and wrote inspired by the time I resigned from my corporate job…The first of hopefully many comic blogs

Along the Flower Path

Just over a year ago, I left my job working in the research department at a supply chain management corporation. I had a lot of feelings to untangle at the time before making the decision—worry over money and bills, frustration towards the company for overworking its people, stress from the volume of work, excitement at the thought of something better coming along, fear that maybe it doesn’t get any better than this for me.

But in the end, I bit the bullet and sent my resignation in anyway. Of course, I still have moments where I think that maybe that was a reckless decision to be making in my late 20s, especially given that I don’t come from money.

Yet, here I am…here I’ve been, drawing comics, making book cover designs, learning HTML & CSS, reading manhwas and mangas like it’s my new day job, catching up with my friends in-person, and re-learning to play the kalimba.

I won’t lie, it’s a different kind of struggle jumping from one freelance gig to another, and I am trying to find something more stable (ideally not in a supply chain management corporation lol). But employment instability aside, I don’t quite miss sitting in on office meetings listening to the company CEO go on and on about having AI meeting facilitators (at the time, people at the company were still working remotely), or listening to supervisors worship ChatGPT (once, a senior research supervisor declared in a meeting that ChatGPT was their “God”). I also certainly don’t miss the false sense of urgency created by management and staying late to finish last-minute reports requested by clients because case manager’s agreed to a ridiculous deadline.

Don’t get me wrong, there were some good days. I had quite a few fun and witty colleagues, and it felt nice receiving congratulatory remarks from relatives and old high school friends when they would hear what I did for work (I even learned how to use Excel!). But looking back, it was never an environment that I could expect to grow old in.

Although I didn’t know it at the time, I walked in to that job with a set expiry date.

So, even if it doesn’t feel like it, it’s a good day; even if it doesn’t seem that way, it’s a good life.

The flowers may not always be in full bloom and sometimes, on cloudy days, their petals aren’t quite as vibrant. Nonetheless, I’ll keep walking along the flower path.

Hope you continue to walk along the flower path with me! 🌸
